Andalusia advances in the creation of the Agrifood Data Space Demonstration Center

Around one hundred participants attended the online seminar “Data Spaces: A New Paradigm for Information Exchange” organised by the University of Malaga (UMA) in collaboration with the Andalusian Ministry of Agriculture and Gaia-X Spain. The event highlighted the critical role of data sharing in solving current challenges in the agrifood sector.

The Agrifood Data Space Demonstration Center in Andalusia (EDAan) is a pilot infrastructure designed to validate data spaces and develop governance models aligned with the European Data Strategy. In addition, it aims to become a technological reference for the digital transformation of Andalusia’s agrifood sector. The project is led by UMA.

During the seminar, four initial use cases currently being tested within EDAan were presented:

  • Crop yield prediction: Leveraging satellite data and ground sensors to optimise water use in agriculture.
  • Pest monitoring in crops: Integrating sensor data to identify high-risk zones and enable targeted, efficient treatments.
  • Monitoring water stress: Using satellite and soil sensor data to support smarter irrigation practices.
  • AI for process optimisation: Applying real-time data analysis to improve efficiency in food production and distribution.

The Andalusian Ministry of Agriculture has described EDAan as “a strategic opportunity to advance the digitalisation of our agrifood sector.” The regional government is also developing a roadmap to encourage active and collaborative participation of all stakeholders in Andalusia’s agrifood system within this data space, promoting innovation and data-driven collaboration.
